Author's Note:
This was a short piece stating the three phrases I thought were important in the story, and ultimately decided how the reader would respond to the story.
Through the story A Clean Well Lighted Place, the author puts Tn certain phrases or sentences that seem important to the story. One of them happens relatively close to the beginning of the story. When the waiter is called to bring another brandy the first time he says: "you should have killed yourself, last week." This seems important to me, as it shows how one man can have so much hate toward another. The old man had done nothing accept stay at the diner. Another was when the two waiters were talking one said: "You talk like an old
man yourself. He can buy a bottle and drink at home." This shows that the waiter does not understand why the old man comes here every night. He comes here because it is quiet, not crowded clean and well lighted. The last phrase that I thought was important was when the waiter was at the bar and he said: "The light is very
bright and pleasant but the bar is unpolished." Here he is comparing the bar to the diner, and he further understands why the old man had wanted to stay at the diner.
